Edenton back within a game after weekend split

(Wilson, N.C.) – The Edenton Steamers moved back within one game of first after defeating the Wilson Tob 6-2 on Sunday night. The two teams spilt their quick two-game weekend set with the away team winning each time.

Tobs starter Nate Imig and Steamers' starter Alex Theis began an immediate duel. Edenton's first hit didn't come until the top of fifth when Alex Alders led off the inning with an infield single, but never got him around to score. Wilson's first hit came in the bottom of the frame courtesy of a Shamoy Christopher one out single. Back-to-back walks would load the bases. Chris Meyers struck out after a slew of breaking pitches from Theis. The left hander tossed a fastball to Chase Wullenweber for a wild pitch that brought home Christopher, giving Wilson a 1-0 lead after four.

In the top of the sixth, the Steamers got back-to-back singles but erased one with a double play ball. With Kenny Oyama at third, Quincy Hamilton bounced a single over the head of the first baseman Chris Meyers to tie the game at one. It was his twenty-second RBI of the year, good for most in the Coastal Plain League.

The game remained tied into the bottom of the seventh. Kevin Jordan sent his second home run in three days over the left field wall for a 2-1 advantage. It was a short-lived lead as Josh Arnold surrendered two runs in the eighth on a Kenny Oyama two-run single. The Steamers added three insurance runs in the ninth and cruised to a 6-2 victory. With the win, Edenton moved back within one game of first place as the final week of the first half commences with the halfway point set for Saturday, June 29.

Arnold (0-1) gave up two runs and took the loss. In relief, Grant Crosby (3-1) earned the win after suffering the loss the night prior. The Tobs are 12-8 on the year.

Wilson is on the road on Monday night as they head back to War Memorial Stadium to face the Peninsula Pilots. All the action can be heard on the Tobs Radio Network starting 6:55 PM.
